Columbia Parks and Recreation is organizing the local Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run Competition/Baseball & ASA Softball Skills at Albert-Oakland Park Ballfield on May 3.
Registration and warm-up time begins at 9:30 a.m. and the event will start at 10 a.m. It's free and open to boys and girls ages 7-14. Age is determined as of July 17, 2014.
This is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball. Winners will advance to the Sectional competition the following weekend in Jefferson City. Sectional winners will earn the opportunity to be selected to participate in the Team Championships at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The final level of competition concludes at the 2014 MLB All-Star Game.
Skills include pitching for accuracy at a target, hitting for distance and accuracy from a tee, and running 80' bases for time.
The competition is limited to the first 100 children to register. Registration forms are available at the Parks & Recreation office (1 S. 7th St.), the Armory Sports Center (701 E. Ash St.) or online at www.gocolumbiamo.com. Pre-registration is preferred, but walk-ups are welcome. Copy of birth certificate or baptismal record is required.
