Oh, the Places You'll Go in CoMo: Bike, Walk and Wheel Week

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

Columbia Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with GetAbout Columbia, is teaming up for the 13th Annual Bike, Walk and Wheel Week. The celebration will be held May 11-18.

Bike, Walk and Wheel Week offers a full schedule of activities designed to encourage all Columbians to use active modes of transportation to get to work, school or wherever you need to go around town. Almost all Bike, Walk and Wheel activities are free.

The week kicks off on Sunday with the CoMo Cyclofemme Trail Ride and ends on Saturday, May 18 with a new event Oh, the Places You'll Go in CoMo!

The schedule of events for the week:

Sunday, May 11
CoMo Cyclofemme Trail Ride 2 - 3:30 pm, MKT Trail @Forum Trailhead
Join women around the world in a celebration of women bicyclists!  Experienced cyclists will guide the group on a 12-mile, roundtrip ride on the MKT, MU Recreation and Hinkson Creek Trails.  Giveaways for all participants (while supplies last).  

Monday, May 12
A Bike is Your Ticket on Columbia Transit All Week
Bicyclists ride the city buses for FREE all week! 

Public Art Tour Walk
6 - 7:30 pm, Flat Branch Park playground
JJ Musgrove from the Office of Cultural Affairs will lead a walking tour of the many pieces of public art available throughout downtown. 

Tuesday, May 13
MKT Trail Secret Access Ride
6 - 7:30 pm, Flat Branch Park playground
This 12-mile roundtrip ride will introduce cyclists to Columbia's backyard gem:  the MKT Trail.  Ride leaders will travel at a leisurely pace highlighting access to popular retail locations, neighborhoods and other trail and on-road connections. 

Wednesday, May 14
Bike Maintenance Workshop
6:30-7:45 pm, Walt's Bicycle Fitness & Wilderness Co, 1217 Rogers Street
Workshop will cover the basics of replacing or repairing an inner tube, and simple cable and brake adjustments.

Thursday, May 15
Try Transit Day
Everyone rides free, all day long! 

3M Flat Branch-Hinkson Creek Wetlands Dedication
3:30 pm - 5 pm, 3M Flat Branch-Hinkson Creek Wetlands, MKT Trail
Join us in celebrating a public-private, urban conservation partnership!  Wear your walking shoes and plan to park and walk (0.7 miles) from the MKT Forum Trailhead.  Light snacks and beverages will be served.

Friday, May 16
Breakfast Station Day; National Bike to Work Day
7 - 9 am at various locations around Columbia
Join us in celebrating National Bike to Work Day!  Stop by and enjoy a free breakfast as you bike, walk or wheel about town on your way to work, school or other destinations. Check the Columbia Parks and Recreation website at www.gocolumbiamo.com/ParksandRec/ for participating locations.

Saturday, May 17
Oh, The Places You Will Go in CoMo!
2 - 4 pm, Stephens Lake Park Old Hwy 63 entrance
We have trails in our parks. We have bike lane markings galore. Join us to find new places to explore.  Ride, wheel or walk the paved trails in Stephens Lake Park or venture out to Columbia's newest trails, the Hominy Creek and the extension of Hinkson Creek Trail, near Old Hwy 63 and Moon Valley Rd.  Participants will receive a "Great Places" passport book that includes trailside destinations.  A completed passport book is your entry for great prizes. Choose either a self-guided 1.7-mile loop trail or various out and back destinations up to 4.5 miles.  Arrive early to use the NEW self-service bike repair station for minor adjustments or a little air for your tires.  Helmets are required for cyclists. Giveaways for all participants (while supplies last).

Sunday, May 18
Bicycle History Tour of Columbia
2 pm - 4 pm, Flat Branch Park playground
Are you a history buff who also enjoys traveling by an early 19th century mode of transportation - the bicycle?  Join Trevor Harris, cyclist and amateur historian, on a leisurely 12.5 mile tour highlighting some of Columbia's historic homes and landmarks.  Tour route will include travel on both trails and residential (low traffic) streets.  Helmets required for all participants.

Story Book Trail
Dusk to Dawn, Stephens Lake Park
Read a storybook as you walk through the Darwin and Axie Hindman Garden at Stephens Lake Park. Enjoy though the month of May.
