C.A.R.E. Gallery to Exhibit and Sell Young Artists' Artwork

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

The City of Columbia's Career Awareness Related Experience (C.A.R.E.) Gallery trainees will display their artwork in an end of summer art exhibit/sale from August 5 to 23 at the Boone County Historical Society's Montminy Gallery, which is located at 3801 Ponderosa St., in Columbia Parks and Recreation's historic Nifong Park.

The exhibit will premier with an opening reception/art sale from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5.

This exhibit/sale will highlight new work completed by the C.A.R.E. Gallery trainees this summer.  These 17 teenagers have spent the summer working with visiting artists to create wood block prints, ceramic sculptures, photography works, scarves and other textiles, mixed media artwork, watercolor paintings, decorative jewelry, and much more.  Proceeds from the exhibit/sale go to fund future C.A.R.E. Gallery art projects.

The C.A.R.E. Gallery serves as a visual arts work site for the C.A.R.E. summer program.  Creative youth are given the opportunity to work as artists.  Gallery trainees work with and learn from professional artists during this summer program.  They participate in art activities designed to enhance their existing skills and knowledge.  Gallery trainees learn about artistic techniques, a variety of media, and create their own artwork.

The Gallery is funded in part by the Missouri Arts Council and the City's Office of Cultural Affairs.  The Boone County Historical Society and its Montminy Gallery provide a free exhibit space along with opportunities to experience exhibit space curating to the participants of the program.

The C.A.R.E. Program, which began in 1982, is a comprehensive program for Columbia's at-risk youth that provides:

- paid real-world hands-on work experience
- mentoring
- career exploration

The C.A.R.E. Program works with at-risk 14- to 20-year-olds who live in the City of Columbia, MO and/or attend a Columbia, MO school.

The C.A.R.E. program is administered through the Parks and Recreation Department.  For more information, please visit www.gocolumbiamo.com (search CARE).
