Volunteers Needed for First Night? Columbia New Year's Eve Celebration

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

Volunteers are needed for First Night Columbia! Many roles need to be filled, including assistance with sales, ushering, button checking, and the children's art area.

Volunteers will receive a button for free admission to First Night activities. Those interested should call 874-7499.

Doors for First Night activities in the District will open at 6:30 p.m. on December 31 with entertainment planned from 7 to 11:30 p.m. Revelers will enjoy a spectacular variety of entertainment at 12 venues in downtown Columbia. The entertainment theme "It's All About the Guitar!" will highlight numerous performers who have mastered a variety of guitar playing styles.

Young visitors can visit the "Create and Celebrate" area and participate in their own procession at 9:15 p.m. that will end with a fireworks display. Teen bands will perform at the First Christian Church throughout the night. At 11:30 p.m., the People's Procession will lead revelers to the finale at Courthouse Square with a countdown and fireworks at midnight.

Admission buttons may be purchased at the Columbia Parks and Recreation office at #1 South 7th Street, the ARC at Ash and Clinkscales, Streetside Records and Gerbes Supermarkets for $8 until 4 p.m. on December 31. Those 7 and under will be admitted free, and those purchasing a button ahead of time will be entered into a drawing for prizes. Admission will be $10 at the door.

The annual First Night 5K Run/Walk will begin at 4 p.m. in front of Cyclextreme.
