No appointive, salaried officer or employee of the city shall continue in his/her position after becoming a candidate for any public office, provided that such employee may utilize a leave of absence during his/her campaign for such office properly granted under the provisions of this chapter. An employee, upon election to any public office, shall immediately resign his/her position with the city.
