Boards and Commissions Vacancies

The City Clerk is accepting applications for the following boards and commissions. Applications must be in the Clerk's Office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th floor, by NOON on Monday, July 6, 2009. The application form may be submitted online or in PDF format. Applicants can either complete and submit the online application to the City Clerk directly from the internet or can complete the PDF format online and then print, sign, and submit it by mail to the City Clerk's office for processing.

BOARD OF ELECTRICAL EXAMINERS:  2 vacancies with terms to expire August 1, 2012.  One must be a licensed electrical contractor, and one must be a layperson.  The Board is empowered to give examinations for electricians' licenses and certificates.  Monthly meetings, when necessary, are held on the third Thursday of the month at 4:30 p.m.

BOARD OF MECHANICAL EXAMINERS:  1 vacancy with term to expire June 17, 2011.  Must be a general contractor not in the HVACR business and a resident of the City of Columbia. The Board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates.  Meetings held on the second Tuesday of the month at 5:00 p.m. 

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION CODES COMMISSION:  8 vacancies.  Three vacancies for regular members and three vacancies for alternate members (to serve in absence of the regular member) with terms to expire August 1, 2012 are needed for the following categories: licensed electrician or electrical contractor; major contractor or superintendent; and a minor contractor or home builder.  In addition, two vacancies for alternate members (to serve in absence of the regular member) with terms expiring August 1, 2010 are needed for the following categories: professional engineer with experience in electrical/mechanical engineering; and a master plumber.  The Commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction codes.  Monthly meetings held on the fourth Monday of the month at 4:30 p.m.

BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN COMMISSION:  4 vacancies with terms to expire July 31, 2012.  One shall have knowledge of street construction and maintenance, and three shall have knowledge of bicycling, bicycle safety and/or bikeways.  All must be qualified voters of the City.  The Board advises the Council on issues relating to sidewalks, walkways and trails.  Monthly meetings held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION:  1 vacancy to expire November 1, 2011.  Must be a resident from Ward 5 and a qualified voter of the City.  Members shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the Commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the Commission.  The Commission acts in an advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to community development.  Monthly meetings held on call.

CULTURAL AFFAIRS COMMISSION:  1 vacancy to expire October 31, 2010.  Must be involved in elementary or secondary education and shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the Commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the Commission.  The Commission advises the Council in all matters pertaining to the arts and cultural environment of the City.  Monthly meetings held on the second Monday of the month at 4:15 p.m.

DISABILITIES COMMISSION:  1 vacancy with term to expire June 15, 2011.  Shall have a significant disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act and be a resident of the City.  The Commission considers concerns relating to residents with disabilities.  Monthly meetings held on the second Thursday of the month at 3:00 p.m. 

HOUSING AUTHORITY BOARD:  1 vacancy with term to expire May 31, 2011.  Must be a taxpayer who has resided in the City of Columbia for one year prior to appointment, and must not be an employee of the City of Columbia.  Duties include overseeing housing projects.  Monthly meetings held on the third Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m.  (MAYOR'S APPOINTMENT)

LIBRARY BOARD:  1 vacancy with term to expire June 30, 2012.  Must reside within the Library District and shall hold no other office or position in City government.  Duties include appointing the Librarian and overseeing expenditures of Library fund monies.  Monthly meetings held on the first Thursday after the second Tuesday of the month.  (MAYOR'S APPOINTMENT)

PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION:  1 vacancy with term to expire May 31, 2014.  Must be a qualified voter and resident of the City for at least one year immediately prior to appointment, and shall hold no other office or position in City government.  The Commission makes recommendations pertaining to planning and zoning related issues.  Meetings held on the Thursday, following Council Meeting Mondays, at 7:00 p.m.

PUBLIC COMMUNICATIONS RESOURCE ADVISORY COMMITTEE:  1 vacancy with term to expire December 31, 2010.  Must be a qualified voter and resident of Ward 1.  Shall be experienced in the field of communications, citizenship or management of not-for-profit organizations, and shall not be paid officers or employees of the City, nor serve on the board of directors or be employed by any entity that applies for funding through the committee or which receives funding upon recommendation of the committee.  The Committee advises the City Council in allocating designated revenue to entities that provide public communication services to Columbia citizens.  Meetings held on the fourth Thursday of the month at 4:00 p.m.
