A RESOLUTION

adopting the City of Pascagoula, Mississippi.

    WHEREAS, following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, the United States Conference of Mayors established a program encouraging cities to adopt cities affected by the hurricane; and

    WHEREAS, the United States Conference of Mayors has matched Columbia, Missouri with Pascagoula, Mississippi; and

    WHEREAS, Pascagoula, Mississippi, a city of 26,200 located on the Gulf Coast, suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Katrina.  

    NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBIA, MISSOURI, AS FOLLOWS:

    SECTION 1.    The City of Columbia hereby adopts the City of Pascagoula, Mississippi under the United States Conference of Mayors program.

    SECTION 2.    Residents and businesses in Columbia and the surrounding area are encouraged to provide financial and other assistance to the City of Pascagoula, Mississippi.  Monetary donations may be made through the City of Columbia New Century Fund.

    SECTION 3.    The Mayor is authorized to appoint a steering committee to develop ideas to shape support efforts.  The steering committee may consist of representatives of social service agencies, educational institutions, libraries, businesses, faith-based groups and others.

    SECTION 4.    The City Manager is authorized to coordinate activities to provide assistance to the City of Pascagoula, Mississippi and to designate staff to work with the steering committee.

    ADOPTED this 5th day of December, 2005.
