Mayor Hindman was first elected mayor of Columbia, Missouri in 1995 and is serving his fifth term. He has lived in Columbia nearly all of his life.

He served on the Columbia Tomorrow Committee and as co chair of the Columbia 2000 and Columbia 2000 II long term visioning committees. He headed many issue campaigns, including the wetlands wastewater treatment bond issue, Boone County Home Rule Charter, several Columbia beverage container deposit election campaigns, and the state wide citizen’s campaign for the Katy Trail State Park. He has served on the Missouri State Parks Advisory Board and the Missouri Economic Development Finance Board and serves on the Environmental Improvement and Energy Resources Authority.

Mayor Hindman is a strong advocate of parks and trails and an interconnected non-motorized transportation system and encouraging active healthy lifestyles.

Mayor Hindman served two tours of active duty as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force.

He received the Columbia Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen of the Year, University of Missouri Faculty Alumni, Chevron Times Mirror Publications Citizen Conservation, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Association and MU College of Arts and Science Distinguished Alumnus awards.

Mayor Hindman has been married more than 45 years to Axie. They have two adult children, Skip and Ellen, and four grandchildren.
