Fire Station #7

400 Green Meadows Circle

Background

In November of 2005, voters approved an extension to the 1/4 cent Capital Improvements Sales Tax to fund fire service capital improvement projects and continued apparatus replacement program. Part of the capital improvement package was a plan to replace the existing Fire Station No. 7 due to structural issues and to move the location of the fire station to provide better coverage and response times.

A site has been chosen and purchased by the City of Columbia at the northeast corner of Green Meadows Road and Bethel Street. Several public meetings were hosted to gather feedback and inform neighbors and citizens about the fire station. In addition, a public hearing was held at the city council level and the council has approved the location.

Several months ago, the council awarded the design bid to Peckham & Wright Architects. Peckham & Wright was also the architect for Fire Station No. 8 located at the corner of Nifong and Bearfield Road which opened in December of 2001.

The Columbia City Council authorized the construction bid to be awarded to GBH Builders of Jefferson City Missouri. Groundbreaking occurred on January 10, 2008. The contract with GBH Builders calls for substantial completion to occur sometime in the first week of November 2008. The Columbia Fire Department hopes to occupy and be operating out of the new fire station by mid-January of 2009.
