Situated on the Northwest corner of North Providence Road and Blueridge road in Columbia. Fire Station # 9 will become the HAZMAT station in the City’s complement and has the following
amenities:

The project will meet all current ordinances of the City of Columbia and will be designed to meet
the current building codes adopted by the City of Columbia.

The structure will be constructed primarily of wood framing with structural steel support for the
apparatus bays. The exterior is designed in keeping with the residential style and scale of the
neighborhood in mind. Exterior materials primarily consist of fiber cement siding of two different colors and styles and brick veneer wainscot. The roof will be covered using architectural shingles completing the residential style. Exterior lighting will be low level with cutoffs preventing spill over property lines.

The project is currently registered as a LEED Silver rated project as regulated by the United
States Green Building Council (USGBC). Some of the methods used to achieve this rating will
be:

• Use of FSC certified lumber for the project.
• Recycling of construction waste
  
• Use of low VOC sealants and paints
  
• Recycled content products for flooring
  
• Recycled content products for siding
  
• Recycled brick veneer
  
• The site will include innovative methods of collecting and cleaning storm water runoff
  created by the development on the site including a rain garden and bio-swale.
  

Site specific issues for design include:

• With a residential development to the North Landscaping will be situated to screen the
  station from its residential neighbors.
  
• The site will require a significant amount of excavation in order provide for proper slope
  tolerances required for the movement and parking of fire trucks.
  
• Entry to and exit from the site by Fire Department vehicles will be from/to Blueridge
  Road. Entry into the employee/public parking lot will be from North Providence Road.
  This arrangement separates the critical traffic for department vehicles from the public lot.
  Because of the need for entry/exit from Blueridge Road and the proximity to the
  intersection the existing median which separates East and West bound traffic will be
  removed directly adjacent to the Station entry and exit.
  
• Existing underground storm water and sanitary sewer piping on the site will need to be
  relocated with this project.

Percent For Art

The city's Office of Cultural Affairs along with its City Council-appointed Standing Committee on Public Art is charged with implementation of the Percent for Art component of the Fire Station No. 9 construction project, and has commissioned artist Glenn Williams, an accomplished sculptor and art instructor, for the project. Public comment is an important aspect of the design approval process, so citizens are encouraged to provide feedback once they have read about and viewed the design.
