Animal Control General Information

Purpose:

Two purposes are served:

  1. Protect people - Unvaccinated animals may spread rabies, which is a disease that infects the central nervous system and ultimately results in death for humans.  Loose animals are frequently a traffic hazard; uncontrolled animals may become a nuisance to neighbors by damaging shrubs, lawns, chasing livestock, etc.   Dog bites increase with the number of dogs running loose.
  2. Protect animals - Animals can be harmed by other animals (diseased or vicious), motor vehicles, thieves, and from becoming lost.  Uncontrolled animals are also an expensive problem.  In addition to the costs from injury and property damage, millions of tax dollars are spent each year to shelter and humanly destroy homeless, unwanted or injured animals.

Lost Animals:

If your pet is missing, call Animal Control at 573-449-1888 to report it missing.  It is always a good idea to visit the animal shelter to look for your pet.

The shelter is located at 616 Big Bear Blvd.

Penalties:

A summons may be issued for violation of the Animal Control ordinances.  The maximum penalty upon conviction in Municipal Court is $500 and/or 30 days in jail; the Boone County Associate Circuit Court penalty is $1,000 or imprisonment for not more than one year or by both such fine and imprisonment.
