Running At Large

Report Loose Animals

Control:

Dogs anywhere in Columbia and in urban service areas of the county must remain on the owner's property at all times unless such owner or possessor is engaged in hunting or training.  If the animal will stay in your yard by training or command, no restraint is required.  Obviously, some dogs need a leash, pen, or fence.

Many animal owners feel it is not a violation to let their dog out "once in a while to do its business."  It is not a violation as long as the dog does not get off the owner's property.  However, if the dog gets into the street or onto the neighbor's yard, it is a violation.

Collars:

All dogs over 3 months of age must wear a collar and license tag inside the City of Columbia.  All dogs and cats in Boone County should wear a collar.

A collar allows Animal Control to expedite the return of your animal if it is lost or injured and allows a place to attach the rabies vaccination tag.

Impounding/Redemption And Payment of Fees:

Dogs running at large in the City of Columbia or the urban service areas of Boone County may be picked up and impounded by the Animal Control Officer.   Owners may pick up their pets after providing proof of ownership to the health officer and paying a boarding fee

If your animal is missing, call 573-449-1888 as soon as possible, or visit the shelter at 616 Big Bear Blvd.

Dogs not claimed within 5 days are turned over to the Central Missouri Humane Society.
