Special Olympics is an international
organization which provides year-round sports training
and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports
for people 8 years and older with mental disabilities,
giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical
fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and
participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship
with their families, other Special Olympics athletes
and the community.
Columbia
Parks & Recreation will accept any person who
has a mental disability or experiences cognitive
delays and has significant learning or vocational
problems. Individuals may participate in local, regional
or state events. Each participant must have a 3-year
physical and signed release on file. The forms can
be obtained by calling 874-7312 or at www.somo.org.
