Bats are our only true flying mammals - using wings that are thin membranes stretched between long "fingers." Active mostly at night, bats have nortoriouslly poor eyesight, but use echolocation, a series of high frequency sounds and echoes to detect and capture insects. Bats can eat large numbers of insects, so people often use artificial bat roosts to attract bats to their yards for nighly pest control.
