2007 Annual Park Improvement Projects

In Fiscal Year 2007, $85,000 was budgeted in the Capital Improvement Program for major park maintenance and small renovation projects. Projects are proposed annually by the Parks and Recreation Department and submitted for approval through the City Council. Any unused fund balance is reserved for potential grant matches or other unanticipated projects that may require mid-year funding. The projects below were chosen as 2007 annual park improvement projects.

Hickman Pool Sign

Project Description: Replaced 20-year-old wooden Hickman Pool sign with new aluminum sign installed by park staff.
Project Status: Completed.

Hickman High School

Nifong Park Improvements

Project Description: Construct a 12-foot-wide gravel walkway down the center of the Historic Village connecting to an existing walkway at the Nifong Animal Barn; move the lake dam south and increase the lake size and depth; and install security lighting at the historical village.

Project Status:

October 12, 2009: Park staff completed seeding/strawing work and dressing up of park. Security light at cabin has been installed. Project is completed.
April 1, 2009: Grading and seeding/strawing work by park staff partially completed.
February 15, 2009: MDC has set trees in lake for fish habitat. Staff has begun spreading dirt and leveling areas. Lake beginning to fill.
December 1, 2008: Contractor completed his portion of constructing berms for historic village and leveling of open areas. The Parks and Recreation Department contacted Missouri Department of Conservation requesting fisheries management for Nifong Lake under the Community Assistance Program now that the lake meets the depth requirements.
November 10, 2008: Work on the lake is completed. Increased size of lake from 1.5 acres to 1.9 acres, from 5 ft. deep to 18-20 ft. deep.
October 1, 2008: Work on lake underway.
September 1, 2008: Decided to postpone contractor work until after Heritage Festival.
August 1, 2008: Earthwork contractor is scheduled to move to Nifong for the lake work after completing work at the Stephens waterfall.
November 20, 2007: Dam has been cut so that lake water may drain out into catch basin. Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) salvaged and relocated the fish to Stephens Lake Park. Staff will wait on lake to drain and bottom muck to dry before cleaning and deepening activities in late summer 2008.
October 2007: Parks and Recreation Forestry staff have begun clearing trees for the dam improvements.
September 2007: Twelve-foot-wide gravel walkway down the center of the Historic Village is completed.

Valleyview Park Trail Improvements

Project Description: Replace specific gravel sections of the Valleyview Park trail with concrete to reduce maintenance costs resulting from areas that wash out following heavy rains.

Photo of two culverts installed for Valleview Trail.
410 feet of the northeast portion of the gravel trail was replaced with concrete. Staff seeded and placed strawed along the new concrete.
