2009 Annual Park Improvement Projects

In Fiscal Year 2009, $85,000 was budgeted for major park maintenance and small renovation projects. Projects were chosen by staff and submitted for approval in the Capital Improvement Program, as part of the budget process. Any unused fund balance is reserved for potential grant matches or other unanticipated projects that may require mid-year funding. The projects below were chosen as 2009 annual park improvement projects.

Bench Replacement

Project Description: This is the first funding year for a bench replacement program. Donated benches from the Memorial/Heritage Bench Program have been placed along the trails and in the parks. Some benches date back to 1995 and are in need of replacement. The replacement benches are made with environmentally-friendly recycled plastic lumber and have zinc plaques. The older wooden benches would periodically need to be re-painted and rotten wooden boards replaced. The new benches are more maintenance friendly, as they do not require re-painting, and the recycle-lumber boards do not deteriorate as with wood.
Project Status: Completed. Park staff replaced eight of the old wooden style benches on the MKT Trail between Providence Road and Forum Blvd. with recycled plastic benches. Four of the replacement benches were placed in the newly constructed MKT Plaza (2009).

Hickman High School

Parkade Park Shelter Replacement

Project Description: The old wooden gazebo-style shelter at Parkade Park collapsed during a heavy snow storm in 2008. Install a replacement prefab shelter similar to the Paquin Park Shelter with force account labor.

Parkade Park

Walkway Repair

Project Description: Repair or widen walkways in various parks throughout the system. Staff will prioritize sidewalk improvement needs and authorize repairs as funding allows.
Project Status: Sidwalks to the tennis courts were repaired/replaced at Fairview Park. Unused funds will be added to the Fiscal Year 2010 project budget for walkway repair.

Wireless Internet in Parks

Project Description: Install equipment to provide free wireless Internet service in Flat Branch and Stephens Lake Parks. Coverage area in Stephens Lake Park to include the park shelters, beach area, and Riechmann Pavillion. Coverage area to include both blocks of Flat Branch Park. Solicit sponsor to donate monthly Internet costs.
Project Status: Project completed. iZones has donated the monthly Internet costs as sponsor of the project.
