In Fiscal Year 2008, $85,000 was budgeted in the Capital Improvement Program for major park maintenance and small renovation projects. Projects are proposed annually by the Parks and Recreation Department and submitted for approval through the City Council. Any unused fund balance is reserved for potential grant matches or other unanticipated projects that may require mid-year funding. The projects below were chosen as 2008 annual park improvement projects.

Project Description : Replace the 30-year-old tennis court fencing on the north and south sides of the tennis courts at Hickman High School as a joint City/school project. The City will purchase the fence materials and have it installed by a contractor no later than March 3, 2008. The school district will be responsible for the removal of the existing fence and all future maintenance responsibilities of the complex. As part of this co-op agreement, the Hickman Tennis Courts will become available for public use. The gates will be unlocked during non-school hours, making the courts open for the public and available for programming by the Parks and Recreation Department.
Project Status: Contractor replaced 355' of fencing and two gates. Project completed.

Project Description: Replace the existing shelter at Grindstone Nature Area with a pre-fab steel shelter. Park staff to remove the old wooden shelter; contract labor to install new shelter. Will use existing concrete pad, if no structural problems are found. If a new concrete pad is warranted, it will be constructed by park force account labor.

Agreement with Columbia Public Schools: Click here.
Project Description: Co-op project with Columbia Public Schools (CPS) for improvements of the heating and ventilation systems, expansion of the air conditioning system, and upgrades to the chlorine storage and supply room. Costs to be equally shared between Columbia Public Schools and the City of Columbia. Columbia Public Schools will be the lead agency for the project, with the City having oversight of the UV system installation only. The City's portion will be paid over a three year period, funded by the Park Sales Tax (Annual Parks) and the parks operating budget. Specific improvements include:
Project Notes: The project was approved by the City Council on September 4, 2007. An agreement has been executed with Columbia Public Schools (CPS). CPS put the bulk of the project out to bid, and the bids came back higher than anticipated. The City Council approved an increase in the project amount at the November 5, 2007 Council Meeting.
