Metro Greenbelt / Trail Plan : Trail Plan Map : Bicycle Route Map
Columbia's greenbelt plans represent an organized
effort to preserve open space along the City's major creek corridors.
In 1993 the Columbia City Council created and adopted
a general Greenbelt Policy for the community. Two
years later in 1995, specific Greenbelt Plans for
Hinkson Creek and Bear Creek corridors were developed
and adopted. These greenbelts primarily consist of
the one hundred year floodplain along each of the
respective creeks included in the plans.
The potential exists to use portions of the greenbelt for pedestrian/bicycle trails, where such use would be appropriate. A number of trails are in the planning stage in the Bear Creek and Hinkson Creek greenbelt corridors. Funding for the construction of six separate trail projects, including four phases of the Bear Creek Trail and two phases of the Hinkson Creek Trail have been received through the Federal Surface Transportation Program (STP) Enhancement program. The completion of the trails will provide additional recreational opportunities within Columbia by connecting a number of City park facilities.
