The Columbia Police Department's Mounted Patrol Team was formed in 2006. This team consists of officers who have volunteered their own horses and many hours of training time to put together this team. The officers are required to become certified as mounted officers and are required to take their horses to extensive training to become certified mounts.
The Mounted Team is utilized for special events in a public relations capacity and in an enforcement capacity in crowd control situations. The team has been highly effective in defusing large disruptive crowds quickly and without injury. The horses form a natural bridge to the community as well. The citizens appreciate the approachability of the horses and the riders and often provide the riders with valuable information that can be used in the Patrol Division.
The team currently consists of six riders and seven certified horses and is under the direction of Captain Dianne Bernhard, South Bureau Patrol Commander. To request the Mounted Team for your special event, please contact Captain Bernhard. E-mail Captain Bernhard
