The President's Council on Physical Fitness and sports recommends taking at least 10,000 steps per day to help maintain a healthy lifestyle. It takes the average person about 2,000 to 2,500 steps to walk one mile (5,280 feet). That's a lot of steps! But you'll be surprised how many you already take each day. If you don't have a pedometer, here are some easy ways to add up your steps.
Walk a calculated distance and count the number of steps it took you to walk there. Or, make it easy and measure your stride on a high school track or indoor exercise track.
Divide the number of steps you walk by the distance. This is your average stride length. Use this number to determine the number of steps it takes you to cover any distance.
You can also use an average stride length to measure distance. For men it's 2.5 feet and for women it's 2.2 feet. There are 5,280 feet in a mile - 2,112 steps for men, and 2,400 steps for women is average.
