Building Permits - Owner Occupied Residential Additions and Alterations

A building, electrical, mechanical and/or plumbing permit may be issued to any person to do work in a single family dwelling used exclusively for living purposes, including the usual accessory buildings and quarters in connection with such building, provided that the person is the bona fide owner of the dwelling, will occupy the dwelling for a period of not less than one year, will personally purchase all materials and perform all labor authorized by the permit, and that the applicant shall file an affidavit certifying that these conditions will be met.

The standards for the construction/alteration of a single family structure is the International Residential Code/2006.

If, as the owner, you are planning an addition to or alteration of your home and are interested in doing the work yourself, the Building and Site Development Division is ready to help you with the permitting process and understanding the technical issues.
