Columbia is a zoned community where business, industry, and residential development are controlled to allow good neighbors to live in a growing community. The Zoning Regulation identifies the permitted uses and the other regulations which govern land use, such as building setbacks, parking requirements, sign regulations and bufferyard requirements. The Building and Site Development Division is responsible for the implementation of the zoning ordinance.
Before you locate or relocate, it is important to understand the reasons development is controlled, and the permit uses, setbacks and other limitations of the various zoning districts. Zoning regulations are enforced through the building permit process, certificates of occupancy, business licenses and complaints.
The complete Zoning Regulation can be viewed in Chapter 29 of the Code of Ordinances (link), or to assist with specific questions please telephone (573) 874-7474 and ask to speak to a building inspector.
