Public Works Volunteers in Classrooms

Adult Group Presentations:  The City's Recycling Program will provide either staff or volunteer presenters to give you the information you need concerning:

America Recycles Day/Use Less Stuff Campaign: The Thursday before Thanksgiving is declared American Recycles Day and kicks off the annual Use Less Stuff Holiday Campaign. Beginning the Thursday before Thanksgiving and continuing through New Years Day, the Use Less Stuff Holiday Campaign encourages people to reduce their waste during the season. Click on the following links for more information on reducing holiday waste:

Apartment Recycling: Encourage apartment dwellers to recycle!  The City's recycling program offers recycling bins on a rotating basis to a number of apartment complexes.  You could help us distribute information to these tenants and increase the amount of recyclables dropped into the bins.  We have door hangers, flyers, recycling tips and magnets that can be distributed at apartments.

Drop Off Recycling Area Monitoring:  The City of Columbia provides convenient drop off locations for citizens to recycle materials.  Volunteers are needed to help monitor these sites.

Family Volunteering: Many of the volunteer opportunities with the City's recycling program can fit into family time.  Families volunteering together can do great things! If you wish to have quality time together and instill the spirit of service, try:

Volunteer at Household Hazardous Waste Collections Household Hazardous Waste Collection Aide:  Hazardous materials should never go in our landfill!  You can help see that they are "captured" at the City's household hazardous waste collection days.  Volunteers work two hour shifts and greet citizens, distribute information, answer questions and keep the traffic flowing.  To join the team, contact us!

Newsletters:  The Public Works Recycling and Volunteer Programs produce several newsletters and need researchers and writers.  Short articles on waste reduction and recycling issues are always useful for publications such as:

Recycling ambassadors:  Become a goodwill ambassador for recycling.  Help people unload their recyclables at the City's drop-off recycling locations and give them tips on how to recycle correctly and why it is so important.  Make people happy by praising their recycling efforts and giving them a pen or pencil made from recycled material.

Youth In Action: A summer community service program for kids ages 12-16.  The kids get to select projects and volunteer for activities that appeal to them from a wide variety of possibilities.  Several of the projects involve working with the City's Recycling Program during the summer months.  Projects in the past have included:
