Holiday Schedule

The City of Columbia observes New Years Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, Memorial Day, July 4th Holiday, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Trash and Recycling collection will be delayed one day after the holiday for the remainder of the week.

Safety For Trash and Recycling Collectors

For Your Safety and the Safety of the Sanitation Crew, please wrap broken glass, hypodermic needles, sharp metal, etc., and place them in a disposable container which will resist punctures.  This container may then be placed in your trash bag. Thank you for helping prevent injury to Columbia Refuse Collectors! The Health Department (874-7356) also offers a Red Box Program for the disposal of needles.

Improperly Placed Materials

The Columbia City Council passed an ordinance to collect and charge an additional collection fee for trash, recyclables, and yard waste improperly placed curbside prior to 4 p.m. on the day preceding normal collection. The additional collection fee increases with repeat offenses. The fee is added to the monthly utility statement for that address and becomes the responsibility of the account holder. For residents who are unable to place trash out for collection on the normal day, please make alternate arrangements with a friend or neighbor. This policy does not affect individuals with certified medical problems who have trash collected at the house. Yard waste not properly packaged that remains curbside 48 hours after the normal day of collection, is collected and charged the additional collection fee. Limbs and brush must be in bundles four feet or less and not greater than two feet in diameter. Note: Recyclables that are packaged properly and placed curbside prior to 4 p.m. on the day preceding normal collection are not in violation; they must be properly packaged. If you have questions, please call Columbia Public Works, 573-874-6291. To report an improperly placed materials violation electronically, click here.

Special Trash Pickup (Oversized Items)

To arrange a free pickup of oversized items, call Columbia Public Works or complete the online request form at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled refuse day. This includes bulky items such as furniture and carpet (cut in lengths of 4 feet and in rolls not to exceed 24 inches in diameter). For more information, call 573-874-6291.

Appliance Pickup

NEED AN APPLIANCE HAULED AWAY? Major appliances -- washer, range, dryer, freezer, dehumidifier, stove, dishwasher, refrigerator, water heater, air conditioner, trash compactor, conventional oven -- will be picked up on your regular trash day. Call 573-874-6291 at least 24 hours before your regular trash day OR submit your request online at least 48 hours before your regular trash day. The appliance will need to be curbside by 7:30 a.m. and a $10.00 fee per appliance will be added to your monthly utility bill. If the appliance is not curbside and/or someone takes the appliance from the curb, please call to cancel the pickup to avoid the $10.00 fee.

Yard Waste Collection

Leaves, grass, twigs and small branches should be placed in with your trash or any other bag (except the blue recycling bags), box, or other type of disposal container, and set out with the trash on your regular collection day. The yard waste is used in the city's bioreactor landfill. In the bioreactor, liquid is added to accelerate the decomposition and stabilization of the waste. Methane produced will be used to generate electricity from this renewable energy source.

Place leaves, grass, twigs and branches too small to bundle in any bag (except blue recycling bags), box or disposal container- not to exceed 50 pounds. Limbs must be bundled and should not exceed 4 feet in length, 2 feet in diameter, and 50 pounds per bundle.

Christmas Tree Collection

Curbside pick-up: You no longer need to remove objects from your tree if you don't want to. Whole Christmas trees can be placed curbside with your regular trash and will be collected for use in the city's bioreactor landfill. In the bioreactor, liquid is added to accelerate the decomposition and stabilization of the waste. Methane produced will be used to generate electricity from this renewable energy source. After January 31, trees placed curbside need to be cut into four-foot lengths and bundled.

Drop-off locations: Christmas trees can also be dropped off at the Capen Park Mulch Site (south of Stadium, off Rock Quarry Road) OR the Parkside Mulch Site (north of Memorial Park Cemetery, off Creasy Springs Road). ALL lights, ornaments and stand must be removed prior to deposit at these two sites.
