Compost it - Nature's Way To Recycle!
Attend a free composting workshop and start composting. Get a free or reduced-price bin at the workshop and fill it with yard waste and food scraps. Put the finished compost around any tree, shrub or grass.
Fall and Spring compost workshops are held at the Capen Park Demonstration Site located off Rock Quarry Road. For additional details about the compost workshops, call Columbia Public Works at 874-6271, or send your name, address, telephone number and E-mail address to
pw-volunteer@GoColumbiaMo.comand we'll send you the composting schedule and information you requested.
Leaves, grass, twigs and small branches should be placed in with your trash or any other bag (except the blue recycling bags), box, or other type of disposal container, and set out with the trash on your regular collection day. Bags may not weigh more than 50 pounds. The yard waste is used in the city's bioreactor landfill. In the bioreactor, liquid is added to accelerate the decomposition and stabilization of the waste. Methane produced will be used to generate electricity from this renewable energy source.
Limbs must be bundled and should not exceed 4 feet in length, 2 feet in diameter, and 50 pounds per bundle. Bundles must be secured with adequate string or twine. Please do not use plastic ties. Need to dispose of larger limbs? Please see below.
Take it to a mulch site - it's free!
