Snow and Ice Management

The average annual snow fall in Missouri is approximately 22 inches. However, we all know how unpredictable our weather can be. The City of Columbia covers about 64 square miles and has an approximate population of 108,500. City crews maintain over 500 miles of city streets. Keeping the community safe and mobile are top priorities for the City.

During snow removal operations crews use salt as a melting agent, but their are times when cinders may be added for traction on ice. State maintained roads inside the city limits are handled by the Missouri Department of Transportation who utilize different treatment materials.
