The Fleet Operations Division pursues training opportunities to support the City's fleet of more electronically controlled systems and components. They also provide planning support for a new fueling station for the City and expanded employee parking, all in the area of the Grissum Building.
Since May 2002, the City of Columbia has been using a blend of biodiesel. This is where soy oil is blended with petroleum diesel at rates of 2 percent up to 20 percent soy oil and the remainder is standard diesel fuel. Using this biodiesel blend has several advantages over the use of standard diesel fuel. First, it offers significant clean air benefits. Second, it is a renewal source, reducing our dependence on oil imports and increasing the demand for soybeans grown right here in Missouri. Third, no special equipment modifications are required to use the fuel. Lastly, it adds to the lubrication characteristics of the fuel, which can reduce equipment maintenance costs.
The City is purchasing hybrid vehicles as replacements in areas where these vehicles can be effectively used. Hybrid vehicles are powered by a system combining electric motors with internal combustion engines. The vehicle uses the electric motor until additional power is needed and when the battery requires recharging. The 60 mile per gallon of fuel is more than twice that of a similar vehicle with only an internal combustion engine.
The reduced use of lead free gasoline will not only have a positive financial impact, but the reduced carbon dioxide emissions will improve air quality. The City is committed to the wise use of resources necessary to sustain the quality of life in our community.
