COLUMBIA, MO (October 22, 2008) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th floor, by noon on Friday, Nov. 7. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or on the city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The following are current boards and commissions openings:
The Building Construction Codes Commission has two vacancies for alternate members (to serve in the absence regular members) for each of the following categories: professional engineer with experience in electrical/mechanical engineering (term to expire Aug. 1, 2010) and a master plumber (term to expire Aug. 1, 2010). The commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.
The Community Development Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire Nov. 1, 2011. The member must be a qualified voter of Ward 1 and shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the commission. The commission acts in an advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to community development. Monthly meetings are held on call.
The Columbia Visioning Commission has seven vacancies for coordinating committee members and up to five vacancies for resource members. Members of the coordinating committee must have demonstrated a commitment to the visioning process. Resource members would help in the work of the commission and share their expertise in one or more substantive areas, such as (but not limited to) data collection, fund-raising, intergovernmental cooperation, management or process design. The majority of members of both the coordinating committee and resource members shall be qualified voters residing within the city of Columbia. Two members of the coordinating committee shall be residents of Boone County, not residing within the city limits of Columbia. Candidates will be evaluated on the ability to work with data and understand systematic relationships, the ability to work collaboratively, management skills, independence, existing memberships or positions, and contributions to the diversity of the commission. The commission tracks, monitors and assists with the implementation of the visioning process.
The Cultural Affairs Commission has one vacancy with term to expire Oct. 31, 2011. The member must be from the business and professional community in the Special Business District, but cannot be a resident of Ward 1, and shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the commission. The commission advises the council in all matters pertaining to the arts and cultural environment of the city. Monthly meetings are held the second Monday at 4:15 p.m.
The Internet Citizens Advisory Group has one vacancy with the term to expire Oct. 15, 2010. Members assess the user-friendliness and effectiveness of the city’s Internet activities. The group makes recommendations to staff and Council
on resource priority for the city’s effective utilization of the Internet. Meetings are held every other month on the third Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The Mayor’s Committee on Physical Fitness has 10 vacancies to be appointed by the mayor with one term to expire Nov. 30, 2009, and nine terms to expire Nov. 30, 2011. The committee educates the public about the importance of regular physical fitness activity and promotes, initiates and encourages local physical fitness and sports programs in the community. Monthly meetings are held as needed; quarterly meetings are held the second Monday of the designated month at 12:30 p.m.
The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term to expire June 17, 2011. The member must be a general contractor not in the HVACR business and a resident of the city of Columbia. The board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m.
