Electric lines moved underground

COLUMBIA, MO (July 18, 2008) - Sections of overhead electric lines in the downtown area will be moved underground beginning Monday, July 21. The areas under construction are on Ninth Street between Park Avenue and Ash Street and on Ash Street between Ninth Street and 10th Street. The streets will remain open to traffic at all times but the intersection of  Ash and Ninth streets will be restricted to one lane at times. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when driving in the work area and use alternate routes when possible.

The majority of the underground electric lines will be installed under the sidewalk on the west side of Ninth Street and the south side of Ash Street. However, it will be necessary to excavate in the streets to tie into existing facilities. It is anticipated this work will take three or four weeks to complete.

Columbia Water and Light has contracted with Par Electrical Contractors Inc. to complete this project. The installation of these underground electric lines will allow for the removal of existing overhead electric facilities on the south side of Ash Street between Ninth and 10th and the removal of existing overhead facilities in the alley north of Walnut between 10th Street and Orr Street.  This work is part of an ongoing project to move overhead lines underground.
