Water main break extends boil advisory for sections of Columbia

COLUMBIA, MO (June 22, 2010) - A 12-inch water main on Mexico Gravel Road in northeast Columbia broke late this afternoon causing water pressure to drop. According to standards set by the Department of Natural Resources, Columbia Water & Light had to extend the precautionary water boil advisory issued for this area on Sunday.

The areas in Columbia where customers need to boil water before consuming are: Lake of the Woods, Mexico Gravel Road, Pine Grove Mobile Home Park, Godas, the Links, Hanover, Timber Ridge, Garden City, Indian Hills and the surrounding subdivisions.

Customers are urged to take the following precautions:
• Boil water for three minutes prior to using it for cooking or drinking.
• Do not use ice from an automatic ice maker. Remake ice with water that has been boiled.
• Disinfect dishes and food contact surfaces by immersing for one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented bleach per gallon of water.

Crews are working on restoring water service to the area. Columbia Water & Light must have two clean samples before lifting the water boil advisory which will take a minimum of two days for processing. Customers will be notified by an automatic phone system that the boil advisory has been lifted.
