Potential exists for flooding; residents reminded of flood dangers

COLUMBIA, MO (June 8, 2010) - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flash flood watch for several counties in Missouri, including Boone County. The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is watching the weather situation for problems which could arise due to the possibility of heavy rain.

“A flash flood watch means that flash flooding or flooding is possible within the designated area, and that includes Columbia and Boone County,” says OEM Director Zim Schwartze. “The weather service estimates that one to two inches of rain could fall with the storms that move through tonight. That heavy rain in a short amount of time could cause several problems, particularly at low-water crossings. We also caution those driving in the rain to be aware of the danger of hydroplaning. If you are out in the rain, slow down and be watchful of those areas where water covers the road.”

The flash flood watch is in effect through Wednesday morning. Schwartze recommends that residents stay tuned to local media for the latest weather information and have a plan in place in the event of severe weather and flooding.
