Boards and commissions applications are available

COLUMBIA, MO (July 21, 2010) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 2nd floor, by noon on Friday, Aug. 6. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or on the city’s website at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The following are current boards and commissions openings:

The Board of Electrical Examiners has one vacancy with the term to expire Aug. 1, 2013. The member must be a layperson. The board is empowered to give examinations for electricians’ licenses and certificates. Meetings, when necessary, are held the third Thursday of the month at 4:30 p.m.

The Board of Health has two vacancies with terms to expire Aug. 31, 2013. One member must be a nurse and one must have an interest in public health. The board acts in an advisory capacity to the Council on matters pertaining to public health and animal control. Monthly meetings are held the second Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term to expire June 17, 2011. The member must be a general contractor not in the HVACR
business and be a resident of the city of Columbia. The board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday at 5 p.m.

The Building Construction Codes Commission has three vacancies with terms to expire Aug. 1, 2013. Three alternate members (to serve in absence of the regular member) are needed from each of the following categories: professional engineer (experience in electrical/mechanical), master plumber and landlord. The commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.

The Comprehensive Plan Task Force has one vacancy. Consideration will be given to prior involvement in the visioning process, service on a city commission, professional credentials or participation in a civic, business or professional organization. The task force advises and assists the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council on all phases of the comprehensive plan development, including citizen involvement, public education and outreach, recruitment of volunteers and review of interim products. Monthly meetings are held the second and fourth Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Downtown Columbia Leadership Council has three vacancies with terms to expire May 1, 2011, and May 1, 2012, and May 1, 2013. Two members must be representatives of recognized neighborhood associations and must submit a
letter from an officer of the neighborhood association certifying he/she has been designated by the association as its representative, and one must reside in the expanded downtown development concept plan and study area as defined in the “Downtown Columbia Leadership Council Interim Report” dated May, 2009. Members shall review the boundaries of an expanded downtown development area and work with others in creating a comprehensive downtown strategic plan. Members may also work on other projects as requested by Council. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4 p.m.

The Historic Preservation Commission has three vacancies with terms to expire Sept. 1, 2013. One member must have a background and expertise in historic preservation, one must have a background and expertise as a real estate investor, and one must have an interest in historic preservation and represent disciplines such as architecture, design, law, real estate appraisal, construction/general contracting or be a layperson. The commission makes recommendations to the Council regarding historically significant structures. Monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Internet Citizens Advisory Group has one vacancy with the term to expire Oct. 15, 2012. Members assess the user-friendliness and effectiveness of the city’s Internet activities. The group makes recommendations to staff and Council on resource priority for the city’s effective utilization of the Internet. Meetings are held every other month on the third Wednesday of the month at 5 p.m.

The Source Water Protection Plan Task Force has four vacancies. Consideration will be given to prior service on a city board or commission, professional credentials or participation in a civic, business or professional organization. The task force will assist in the preparation of a Source Water Protection Plan as outlined by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ “Guidelines for Developing a Source Water Protection Plan.” Meetings are held on call.

The Substance Abuse Advisory Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire Oct. 31, 2011. The member must be a healthcare professional, and have a demonstrated interest in and concern for substance and alcohol abuse problems in the community. The commission promotes coordination of programs intended to prevent and eliminate alcohol and substance abuse. Monthly meetings are held the second Wednesday at 12 p.m.

The Tax Increment Financing Commission has two vacancies with terms to expire Sept. 1, 2014. The commission serves as an advisory body to the City Council as it relates to the consideration of tax increment financing proposals submitted by interested parties or initiated by any public agency in accordance with the Real Property Tax Increment Allocation Redevelopment Act. Meetings are held on call. (mayor’s appointment with the consent of the City Council)
