COLUMBIA, MO (September 22, 2010) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 2nd floor, by noon on Friday, Oct. 8. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or on the city’s website at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The following are current boards and commissions openings:
The Board of Adjustment has one vacancy for an alternate member, to serve in the absence of a regular member, with the term to expire Nov. 1, 2015. The member must be a resident of the city of Columbia. The board is responsible for hearing and deciding appeals where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision or determination made by an administrative official in the enforcement of zoning, planning and subdividing ordinances. Monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The Board of Electrical Examiners has one vacancy with the term to expire Aug. 1, 2013. The member must be a layperson. The board is empowered to give examinations for electricians’ licenses and certificates. Meetings, when necessary, are held the third Thursday of the month at 4:30 p.m.
The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term to expire June 17, 2011. The member must be a general contractor not in the HVACR business and must be a resident of the city of Columbia. The board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday at 5 p.m.
The Building Construction Codes Commission has six vacancies with terms to expire Aug. 1, 2011, Aug. 1, 2012 and Aug. 1, 2013. One is needed from each of the following categories: professional engineer (experience in electrical/mechanical), master plumber, fire expert, electrician, minor contractor and landlord. The commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.
The Community Development Commission has three vacancies with terms to expire Nov. 1, 2013. One member each is needed from Ward 2 and Ward 3, and one member may be from any ward. All must be qualified voters of the city and shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the commission. The commission acts in an advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to community development. Monthly meetings are held on call.
The Cultural Affairs Commission has four vacancies with terms to expire
Oct. 31, 2013. One member must be from the business and professional
community, one must be involved education, one must have significant knowledge and demonstrated interest in one or more areas of the arts, including music, dance, literature, visual arts, theater, folk arts, media arts, design and arts education and one must be a layperson with no specialized knowledge in the arts. Members shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the commission. The commission advises the Council in all matters pertaining to the arts and cultural environment of the city. Monthly meetings are held the second Monday at 4:15 p.m.
The Internet Citizens Advisory Group has two vacancies with terms to expire Oct. 15, 2013. Members assess the user-friendliness and effectiveness of the city’s Internet activities. The group makes recommendations to staff and Council on resource priority for the city’s effective utilization of the Internet. Meetings are held every other month on the third Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The Library Board has one vacancy, to be appointed by the mayor, with the term to expire June 30, 2012. The member must reside within the Columbia Library District and shall hold no other office or position in city government. Duties include appointing the librarian and overseeing expenditures of library fund monies. Monthly meetings are held the first Thursday after the second Tuesday.
The Source Water Protection Plan Task Force has three vacancies. Consideration will be given to prior service on a city board or commission, professional credentials or participation in a civic, business or professional organization. The task force will assist in the preparation of a source water protection plan as outlined by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ “Guidelines for Developing a Source Water Protection Plan.” Meetings are held on call.
The Substance Abuse Advisory Commission has four vacancies with terms to expire Oct. 31, 2011, Oct. 31, 2012 and Oct. 31, 2013. Three shall have demonstrated interest in and concern for substance and alcohol abuse problems in the community, and one must be a student under the age of 25. The commission promotes coordination of programs intended to prevent and eliminate alcohol and substance abuse. Monthly meetings are held the second Wednesday at 12 p.m.
