Power outages due to trees on lines
COLUMBIA, MO (February 26, 2013) - Heavy accumulations of snow on Columbia trees has led to numerous downed power lines. Columbia Water and Light has had over 40 outages with up to 4,000 customers without electricity earlier in the day. As of 8 a.m. the number of customers without power was down to 1,500. Columbia Water and Light electric crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible.
To report a downed power line or report an outage call 573-875-2555. Call 911 immediately if someone is hurt. Electric lines are usually the wire at the very top of the pole. Cable and phone lines are lower on the pole. People need to stay far away from any downed power line and not touch anything or anyone that is touching a downed line. Stay inside a vehicle if there is an electric line touching it until help arrives. If you must get out of the car, jump clear without touching the car and ground at the same time. Shuffle away from the car.
