Be Prepared for Possible Severe Weather on Tuesday

COLUMBIA, MO (April 18, 2011) -

The latest information from the National Weather Service (NWS) predicts a threat of severe thunderstorm activity through our area Tuesday afternoon and evening, April 19th.  The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) reminds residents to take time before storms threaten the region to review plans for dealing with severe weather.  Schools, hospitals, businesses and families are advised to evaluate plans, and stay updated on the latest weather information.

“In the wake of devastating severe weather in the southern and eastern U.S. this past weekend, the message of preparation rings loud,” according to OEM Director Zim Schwartze.  “Tuesday’s storms are expected to be significant and widespread meaning everyone could be caught in dangerous conditions.  We urge everyone to recognize how they must prepare, whether they are at home, school, work, or on the road.”

The National Weather Service says the anticipated storms have the potential for large hail, damaging winds and possible tornadoes.  The Office of Emergency Management urges everyone to stay informed of the latest weather information.

While the Office of Emergency Management would activate the city and county’s outdoor warning sirens in the event of a tornado warning, Schwartze reminds residents that the outdoor warning sirens are designed primarily to warn people who are outside.  If you are indoors, the best way to be alerted to severe weather is by having a NOAA weather radio, or to be tuned to local media when severe thunderstorms and weather are a possibility.

During severe weather, residents are asked to refrain from calling 9-1-1 during a storm unless a life-threatening emergency is actually occurring.  For non-life-threatening storm related calls, contact local utilities or the Public Safety Joint Communication non-emergency line at #573-442-6131.
