Correction: Early Morning Fire Displaces Residents

COLUMBIA, MO (April 24, 2011) -

For Immediate Release:

Residential Structure Fire Displaces Owner and Roommate

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 02:35 am on Sunday, April 24, 2011, to 1013 Crump Ln for a reported residential structure fire.

Fire crews arrived on the scene at 02:39 and found smoke showing from the residence.  Shortly after that the Division Chief arrived on the scene and reported flames showing from a window on the front of the house. The fire was knocked down in approximately 15 minutes and the only injuries that were reported was the loss of a pet cat. Both residents, one dog, and 1 cat were out of the structure upon the arrival of the Fire Department.

The owner of the home, Steven Bowne, and his roommate were awakened by smoke detectors and found smoke in the structure. After investigating and a failed attempt to extinguish the fire they exited the structure and called 911. At the time of this release Assistant Fire Marshal Stephen Potter reported that the fire was still under investigation. He did however issue a preliminary damage estimate of $ 50,000.00.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you can not afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
