Resident Returns to Columbia When Notified of Fire

COLUMBIA, MO (April 24, 2011) -

For Immediate Release:

Resident Returns to Columbia When Notified of Fire

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 6:05 pm on Sunday, April 24, 2011, to 2002 Hanover Blvd for a reported residential structure fire.

Fire crews arrived on the scene at 6:09 and found smoke showing from the residence.  Crews forced entry into the structure and located a fire in the laundry room. The fire was knocked down in 5 minutes and there were no injuries associated with this incident.

A passer by noticed smoke coming from the residence and called 911. The owner of the home, Jeff Colborn, was out of town at the time of the fire but returned to Columbia while crews were still on the scene. At the time of this release Assistant Fire Marshal Stephen Potter reported that the fire was ruled undetermined at this time. He did however issue a preliminary damage estimate of $ 30,000.00.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you can not afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
