Contact: Columbia Public Works
Columbia Public Works has increased efforts beyond the originally planned 2-person and 8-person crews this evening to treat roads. A full road crew has been working since 5:30pm to salt priority routes and will work overnight to fight slick road conditions. Crews pre-treated hills, bridges and curves on priority routes with salt brine yesterday in preparation for the icy conditions, and have been closely monitoring the forecast so that crews would be prepared and could act quickly when precipitation affected road conditions.
Road conditions are still very slick this evening and freezing rain is predicted to continue overnight and into mid-day Saturday. Air and pavement temperatures look to remain below freezing overnight so widespread slickness is expected. It is anticipated that pavement conditions will significantly deteriorate through the evening and overnight, and customers should use caution if they have to travel.
