Contact: Columbia Public Works
Columbia Public Works road crews are making great progress in reaching residential areas, reporting over 50% of residential streets have already been treated with salt after this weekend's winter weather turned Columbia roadways into an ice rink. Crews worked overnight treating residential streets with salt, and maintaining passable conditions on 1st and 2nd priority routes for customers. Road crews will continue to work around the clock until all neighborhoods are reached. Efforts for treating the residential areas started in the center of the city early Saturday morning and are working outward as quickly as possible.
Columbia Public Works reported that the salt treatment is working very well on the roadways and customers are seeing a big difference in the driving conditions. Priority routes are reported as generally passable, with the exception of a few patchy slick spots. Motorist should use extreme caution if traveling on the roadways, and travel should be avoided if possible and if your roadways are still slick.
Public Works is tracking the possibility for more precipitation entering the area Monday night and Tuesday and making the necessary preparations.
Customers took to the City's social media pages for updates on road progress and to comment on the roads. A progress map for residential streets is available on www.comosnow.com
