The Columbia Fire Department will be testing fire hydrants in the Keene Street, Brown Station Road, Route B and Forum at Nifong areas on Saturday, June 28. This will ensure the hydrants have adequate water flow and pressure for fire fighting purposes. Customers might notice reduced water pressure when a hydrant is flushed nearby. Sediment in the pipes can also be stirred up which can temporarily discolor the water. Almost 6,000 hydrants have been tested by the Fire Department since they started their annual hydrant testing in May.
If a customer notices discolored water they should avoid doing laundry. The water will usually return to a normal color after the water has run for a few minutes. The water will continue to be safe for consumption. For those with commercial fire alarm systems, they might be temporarily affected by the low pressure.
This is a cooperative program between the Fire Department and Columbia Water & Light. If customers experience prolonged problems with discolored water, Columbia Water & Light can be contacted by calling the after-hours emergency number at 573-875-2555 or 573-874-6229.
