Mike Matthes
City Manager-Designate
(515) 202-8302
Mayor Bob McDavid announced yesterday the appointment of Mike Matthes as the next city manager for the city of Columbia. His appointment takes effect May 1. He replaces Bill Watkins who retired March 11.
Matthes, currently serving as assistant city manager in Des Moines, Iowa, will be paid a salary of $150,000 along with other benefits authorized by city ordinance, including a monthly car allowance.
“I couldn’t be more excited about moving toColumbia, and I am profoundly honored by the City Council’s vote of confidence,” Matthes said. “Columbiais a great place to live and work, and my family is excited about it, too.”
Matthes has some Missouri roots. “I grew up in Chillicothe and grew to love the Royals,” Matthes said. “There is a great ‘vibe’ in Columbia with Missouri University, Stephens College and Columbia College, and I’m looking forward to enjoying Tiger ball games.”
Matthes said that the city is in as fine a financial shape as any he’s seen, something he attributes to a history of good, local decision-making. “And public service is a noble profession…we’re in the business of helping people and saving lives. This is a great place to live and work, and a great fit for my family and me,” Matthes said.
Although he officially takes office on May 1, Matthes said he likely would be in Columbia a couple of weekends to find rental housing and talk with City Council members and staff. “I want to get a deeper understanding of Council priorities and speak with department directors, too,” Matthes said.
