The Solid Waste Utility provides you with a number of services, most notably weekly curbside trash and recycling collection.  But it’s more than that.  Solid Waste also operates a landfill, a Materials Recovery Facility (where we sort the recyclable materials), drop off recycling points, a household hazardous waste collection site, commercial trash collection, and commercial recycling.

The utility has some problems. Problems we can solve by working together.

  • Our employees work hard and provide us with great service. Our current system makes it a job that is hard on their bodies resulting in injuries and worker’s compensation claims which average over $300,000 annually for the past five years.
  • Solid waste residential collection employee’s are hard to retain. Over two-thirds of these employees leave every year. We regularly have openings which are difficult to fill.  
  • We have a low diversion rate (recycling rate + other materials diverted from going into the landfill) that is half of the national average.

As a community, we need to talk. And we need to listen. We’re embarking on a series of Ward meetings and Forums to have an open discussion with the community in hopes that together, we can strengthen the Solid Waste Utility and work to provide the service levels our customers expect today and tomorrow. That is why we are reaching out for your help in creating a Solid Waste Utility that reflects our community’s values.

We’ll use this website (which will continuously be updated with more information), social media, traditional media, and any other means we can think of to keep you informed of meeting dates, times, and locations.
