A community is sustainable when it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
The Office of Sustainability (OS) was implemented in FY 2010 to further implement Resolution 160-06 A endorsing the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. The city of Columbia strives to meet or exceed Kyoto Protocol targets for reducing global warming pollution by taking actions in our own operations and community.
We also encourage other businesses and organizations to do the same. To recognize their efforts, the city of Columbia established the Mayors Climate Protection Agreement Awards program on Earth Day 2014.
Below are the different categories of Sustainability that the city of Columbia focuses on.
The city of Columbia is committed to "walking the talk". If we are to encourage our customers to be good stewards of our resources we must also be good stewards of our resources.
The city of Columbia is fortunate to have a municipal-owned electric and water utility that is at the forefront of energy conservation programs and renewable energy procurement and production.
The city of Columbia encourages strategies to minimize the impact on ecosystems and our natural resources.
How we get from location to location in our community has an effect on the environment.
