January 20: Keep Embracing Youth (K.E.Y.) Lock-ins –Volunteers will assist staff working with youth in attendance at quarterly male-only and female-only Lock-Ins at the Armory (Jan 20 is male-only.). Positive Role models needed, great opportunity for sociology and education majors; shifts are a possibility. Background checks are required; prefer volunteers who can return quarterly. Starting January 29: Special Olympics Swimming – Seeking volunteers with swim experience for hands-on volunteer positions. Practices are Sundays 6:00-7:30pm at Hickman Pool. Thank you for your interest; most of these positions are filled, but staff will still consider a male with coaching experience.
February 21, 23 & 25: TreeKeepers: Participate in this three session class and learn all about tree management and maintenance. Following the class, volunteers are asked to share 36 hours of service on projects in city parks on Saturday mornings. Classes will be held at the ARC, 1701 W. Ash. Registration is online.
Starting March 1: Special Olympics/Adapted Volleyball – Thursdays 6:00-7:15pm at the Armory, March 1 through mid-May. Very limited number of positions available; competitive background is required. Volunteers should be willing to help throughout the season and be caring and compassionate with the athletes. A Class A application form and background check are required for volunteers and a copy of their driver's license is due at the first practice. Inquire further to participate.
Starting March 7: Special Olympics Track – Wednesdays through mid-May, 5:30-6:30pm at Lange Middle school. Track experience is helpful, but not required. Must commit to help for theentire season. A background check is required; volunteers must complete a Class A application form and bring a copy of their driver's license to the first practice. Learn more!
Evenings, Monday, March 12, Monday, March 19 & Wednesday, March 21: CARP - Columbia Aquatic Restoration Project: Volunteers attend three evening classes learning about aquatic ecology and management and are asked to volunteer for 19 hours on projects along streams, lakes and ponds in city parks on Saturday mornings. CARP classes will be held at the ARC, 1701 West Ash. Register online.
Saturday, April 7, 2012: Egg Hunt Eggstravaganza –Volunteers are needed from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to hide eggs and to host or lead games and other fun activities at Douglass Park. This is a great volunteer opportunity for groups, individuals and youth! Groups are welcome to bring a game or activity. Y
Saturday, April 14, 2012: Cleanup Columbia: Join hundreds of other Columbia residents in this city-wide trash pick up event! We’ll help you find a location and provide you with the supplies and have your filled bags picked up… you provide the elbow grease! Y
Sunday, April 22: Earth Day Festival: Volunteers will assist staff with a variety of crafts such as leaf rubbings, making insect bookmarks, face-painting, and more! Join in this great family event by taking a shift for a few hours this afternoon! Y
