DEPARTMENT / DIVISION:
Police
Work is generally performed under general supervision and is reviewed by observation of results obtained. This is clerical and office work within the Patrol Division of the Police Department. Work involves standard clerical duties of a highly procedural nature including typing, filing, sorting, and operating office machines. Special operational skills, if required by a specific position, are generally acquired through on the job training.
SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES:
None. However, may provide guidance and training to new employees
WORK PERFORMED:
Performs clerical work such as transcribing detailed records from a dictaphone; checks and maintains reports; proofreads typed materials to verify correct spelling, punctuation, and format. Acts as receptionist; answers telephone and personal inquiries; routes visitors and calls; secures information from appropriate sources. Sorts and files reports and other materials, alphabetically, numerically, or by other established classification; prepares materials for distribution; posts data to individual records; keeps routine records. Operates a variety of office equipment. Types reports and correspondence using a typewriter or computer. Maintains inventory and supplies necessary for office operations. Performs related duties as needed or assigned.
PARTIAL LISTING OF MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school and one year of general clerical experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which would provide the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Some knowledge of business communications. Some knowledge of office practices, methods, and procedures. Ability to operate a variety of modern office equipment, including personal computers, dictaphone and other electronic equipment; ability to successfully complete the City Clerical Exam and typing test prior to application deadline. Ability to perform clerical work of standard difficulty. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees and the general public. Ability to write legibly, use proper grammar and punctuation and to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work at routine assignments for extended periods as needed. Excellent work history and attendance record. No serious criminal record (determined by nature of violation).
