Work is generally performed under supervision of the Printer II. This individual is responsible for handling all U.S. mail and interdepartmental mail for various departments within the City of Columbia. Work involves duties of a highly procedural nature including filing, sorting, arithmetical computations, posting data, keeping records, and operating mail machines. Requires familiarity with mail processing equipment and standard practices for handling mail. Special operational skills, if required, are generally acquired through on the job training. Assists with printing operations as required.


    SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES:
None; however, the employee may be expected to give guidance and direction to less experienced staff.


    WORK PERFORMED:
Picks up and delivers in-bound regular, inter and intra-department mail, in accordance with posted schedule and department procedures. Bends, stoops and lifts mail & packages weighing up to 70 lbs. Delivers in-bound UPS packages, or notifies receiving department to pick up. Records out-bound UPS packages. Drives to and picks up mail from U.S. Post Office in accordance with posted schedule. Maintains inventory and supplies necessary for office operations. Posts all out-bound letters and packages. Prepares and records daily postage charges for each department. Refills postage meter as necessary. Sorts and bundles mail; monitors and delivers "red" envelopes within one hour from receipt. Contacts departments as needed for special deliveries. Delivers Council packets as required. Works in Print Shop as needed, operating printing and associated equipment. Performs related duties as needed or assigned.


    PARTIAL LISTING OF MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school and one year of related mail-room experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which would provide the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Excellent physical condition to permit frequent walking, bending, stooping, lifting up to 70 pounds, and carrying mail/packages in all types of weather. Some knowledge of office practices, methods, and procedures. Ability to operate a mail processing equipment, including automated postage system. Ability to perform clerical work of standard difficulty and successfully complete the City Clerical Exam prior to application deadline. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, the general public, and the U.S. Postal Service. Ability to write legibly, use proper grammar and punctuation and to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work at routine assignments for extended periods as needed. Excellent work history and attendance record. Possess and maintain a valid Missouri Driver's license, excellent driving record, and dependable personal vehicle for conducting City business. Must be bondable, as necessary.
