Police/Admin. Support
Work is performed under the general supervision of a Systems Analyst. The employee is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment and discretion in the performance of a variety of job duties. This is specialized, technical work involving efficient and accurate collection, collation, and analysis of crime data and the dissemination of analyzed crime information.
SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES:
None; however, the employee may be required to provide direction/training to new employees and/or interns.
WORK PERFORMED:
Responsible for gathering statistical criminal information, analyzing crime patterns and trends, reviewing criminal intelligence information, preparing intelligence reports, and providing analytical support to all law enforcement personnel regarding special needs and requests. Collects crime data from arrest records, field interviews, police reports, informants and other law enforcement agencies. Develops computer generated reports and special memos from the collection of crime data. Analyzes crime data to determine crime trends, patterns, and preventative measures for suspected problem areas. Uses both basic and complex computer programs to analyze data. Assists in the design, testing and or maintenance of operational data bases, analytical software and hardware. Performs related duties as needed or assigned.
PARTIAL LISTING OF MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or equivalent (college course work in criminal justice or business school training preferred); and two years of paraprofessional experience; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Some knowledge of basic principles and practices of investigation and intelligence data gathering used in a law enforcement agency. Considerable knowledge of computer operations/applications and those specific to police administration including the federal and state Uniform Crime Reporting System (UCR). Ability to analyze offenses, identify similarities and reach logical conclusions based on information. Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and analyze data. Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and advisory data or information. Ability to follow detailed procedures and to operate a personal computer. Successful completion of the City Clerical Exam and typing test prior to application deadline. Knowledge of record-keeping systems. Knowledge of standards and techniques for maintaining records. Ability to organize workload and comply with priorities and deadlines. Ability to establish and maintain an effective record keeping system. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to prepare clear and concise reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, volunteers, other law enforcement and public safety agencies and the general public. Ability to deal courteously and authoritatively with the public. Ability to prepare oral and written reports, presentations, and recommendations. Personal background suitable for law enforcement assistance work. Excellent work history and attendance record. All mandatory training must be successfully completed within the probationary/qualifying period.
