    DEPARTMENT / DIVISION:      Public Works/Public Buildings
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Building and Grounds Supervisor. This is manual and supervisory work in the care, cleaning and maintenance of assigned City buildings and property.


    SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervision is exercised over a crew of Custodians.


    WORK PERFORMED:
Determines work schedules and plans, organizes, assigns and evaluates the work of subordinate Custodians; inspects work areas to ensure they are adequately cleaned. Ensures that adequate cleaning supplies and equipment are available to custodial crews; orders supplies as needed. Maintains custodial reports, times records, inventories of supplies. Bends, stoops, and twists to vacuum, sweep, mop, scrub and polish floors; shampoos carpets; washes windows and walls. Dusts, polishes and moves furniture and equipment while bending/stooping or reaching overhead. Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and drinking fountains; replenishes restroom supplies. Climbs ladders to replace light bulbs; empties trash containers. Cleans and polishes brass and other metal fixtures. Closes and locks buildings; opens buildings. Loads and unloads cleaning supplies, materials and equipment; operates vacuum cleaners, buffers and related cleaning equipment. Maintains lawns, sidewalks and parking areas; shovels snow and removes debris and trash; operates hand and power mowers and related equipment. Drives City vehicle to other work locations to perform custodial duties. Performs related duties as needed or assigned.


    PARTIAL LISTING OF MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of tenth grade and three years of experience in cleaning buildings, including some supervisory experience; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Considerable knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment. Considerable knowledge of safety standards and regulations pertaining to the care and cleaning of buildings and grounds. Skill in the application of practices, techniques, and equipment used in the custodial field. Some knowledge of supervisory practices and techniques and the ability to plan, organize, assign, and evaluate the work of subordinate custodians. Ability to read and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to operate such equipment as a vacuum cleaner, buffer, lawn mower, or weed eater. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting heavy objects weighing up to 100 lbs. Ability to drive City vehicles to other work locations as needed. Excellent work history and attendance record. Possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver's license and an excellent driving record. Must be available to work a split shift schedule as needed.
