VEHICLE SERVICE WORKER

Work is performed under the continuing supervision of an assigned shift supervisor or superintendent. This is manual and mechanical work servicing automotive vehicles and other equipment and in performing minor maintenance and repairs.


    SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES:
None.


    WORK PERFORMED:
Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, and lubrication of various gasoline and diesel automobiles, trucks, buses, and other vehicles utilized by a municipal operation. Performs minor tune-ups and repairs to equipment, including ignition components, electrical circuits, alternators, starters, batteries, lights, cooling system components, fuel system components, etc. Utilizes a checklist and records various aspects of the service procedures. Performs routine brake work and minor mechanical and electrical work, as directed, utilizing diagnostic equipment as needed; changes and repairs automotive, truck, and tractor tires utilizing air and electrical tire-changing machines. Assists mechanics in their work. Performs repetitive arm, wrist and hand movements while in the process of removing/installing parts and components while in a prone position; works under vehicles on a hoist or over a pit in situations where arms are extended overhead for several minutes at a time. Goes on service calls and uses air tools and lifting/hoisting equipment to assist in changing tires on equipment, sometimes in adverse weather conditions (i.e., rain, snow, mud, etc.). Drives/operates vehicles and equipment pre- and post-repair. Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition. Performs related duties as needed or assigned.


    PARTIAL LISTING OF MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of tenth grade and some experience in the servicing of automobiles or other light equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which would provide the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Some knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades. Some knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with vehicle maintenance and repair and of relevant safety standards and precautions. Ability to use and maintain bench and hand tools, and test equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades in a safe, efficient manner. Ability to work in prone position while reaching overhead for extended periods of time; ability to withstand repetitive arm, wrist and hand movements; lift and carry automobile parts or other equipment weighing up to 100 lbs.; and respond to service calls in sometimes adverse weather conditions. Ability to drive/operate vehicles and equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work cooperatively with others. Excellent work history and attendance record. Possess and maintain a valid Missouri Commercial Driver's License; permit, Class B with air brakes, within 3 months of hire, and Missouri Commerical Driver's License, Class B, air brake qualified, within 6 months of hire.
