VEHICLE SERVICE WORKER

    DEPARTMENT / DIVISION:      Public Works/Transportation
Work is performed under the supervision of an assigned shift supervisor. This is manual and mechanical work servicing, cleaning and fueling passenger buses and vans and performing minor repairs.


    SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES:
None.


    WORK PERFORMED:
Performs preventive maintenance inspections and lubrication, fueling and cleaning of various vans, buses, and other vehicles utilized by a municipal operation. Utilizes a checklist to record various aspects of the service procedures. Performs minor mechanical and electrical work, as directed. Removes/installs parts; cleans and services vehicles. Goes on service calls and uses air tools and lifting/hoisting equipment to assist in changing tires on equipment, sometimes in adverse weather conditions (i.e., rain, snow, mud, etc.). Operates vehicles in limited clearance areas while backing up and turning. Drives/operates vehicles and equipment pre- and post-repair. Reports vehicle and equipment defects in writing and orally. Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition. Assists mechanics, drivers and dispatchers in their work. Cleans bus stops including shelters and benches and other transit areas as needed. Performs related duties as needed or assigned.


    PARTIAL LISTING OF MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of tenth grade and some experience in the servicing of automobiles or other light equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which would provide the following knowledge, skills, and abilities. Some knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades and janitorial trades and of the occupational hazards connected with vehicle maintenance and repair and of relevant safety standards and precautions. Ability to use and maintain bench and hand tools, and test equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades in a safe, efficient manner. Ability to work in standing position while reaching overhead for extended periods of time; ability to withstand repetitive arm, wrist and hand movements; lift and carry automobile parts or other equipment weighing up to 100 lbs.; and work out of doors in sometimes adverse weather conditions. Ability to drive/operate vehicles and equipment while following traffic laws and established policies and to drive vehicles in limited clearance areas while turning and backing up. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to report vehicle defects clearly both orally and in writing and maintain necessary records of vehicles. Ability to work cooperatively with others. Ability to report deviation from normal operations to appropriate supervisory personnel. Excellent work history and attendance record. Possess and maintain valid Missouri Commercial Driver's License, class B, air brake qualified and passenger endorsement.
